Mary Thorp, artist's profile:

“I love the raw integrity of simple landscapes: lots of sky, bare stones, ragged seas and dry grasses blown by the wind. Colour and light affect our experience of environments. I try to capture the drama of wind, sky, weather and sunlight changing over the landscape in the sparse graphical images that I print.

The images begin life as spontaneously taken digital photographs that are manipulated and washed with colour to draw out the stark forms. It requires both confidence and discipline – doing less rather than more to leave the image as untouched as possible. Digital photographic art has proved to be a perfect medium for me, indulging a passion for colour, form and space and, for the moment, I am comfortable to keep a lens between me and the finished piece of work.

Since childhood I have been a compulsive maker of things and am inspired by the simple beauty of good design and impeccable construction. In my working life as a designer I am considered and thoughtful, and I’m delighted to be producing work as an artist too.”

Mary is a member of The Chartered Society of Designers and her images are currently available as framed or mounted limited edition prints, handmade cards and boxed art-card sets.
